Women Artist Film Series

March 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

In honor of Women’s History Month, Mason County District Library and Ludington Area Center for the Arts invite the public to view three biographical films about women artists. All the films will be shown at the West Shore Bank Room at Mason County District Library in Ludington.

On Sunday, March 10 at 2:00 pm, our film will be Georgia O’Keeffe, starring Joan Allen and Jeremy Irons, directed by Bob Balaban. Celebrated photographer and art impresario Alfred Steiglitz (Jeremy Irons) is shocked to learn that the extraordinary drawings he has recently discovered were rendered by a woman. Deciding to display the work of then-unknown artist Georgia O’Keeffe (Joan Allen) in his gallery without her knowledge, the fiercely private artist orders him to remove the collection. Once Alfred convinces her to allow him to become her benefactor and to champion her artistry, their relationship evolves as they fall deeply in love. As their relationship suffers, Georgia’s search for solace moves her west, where she finds new inspiration for her paintings – and ultimately her own voice – in the New Mexico landscape.

On Tuesday, March 19, at 7:00 pm, our film will be Cutie and the Boxer, presented by POV, PBS’ award-winning documentary series. This film captures two lives united by a dedication to art-making for a touching meditation on the eternal themes of love and sacrifice. Cutie and the Boxer is a 2013 American documentary film produced, shot, and directed by Zachary Heinzerling. The film focuses on the chaotic 40-year marriage of two artists, the boxing painter Ushio Shinohara and his wife Noriko and features original artwork by the couple.

On Wednesday, March 27, at 7:00 pm, the scheduled film is Isadora, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Jason Robards, directed by Karel Reisz. The film is a biography of the dancer Isadora Duncan, the 1920s dancer who forever changed people’s ideas of ballet. Her nude, semi-nude, and pro-Soviet dance projects as well as her attitudes on free love, debt, dress, and lifestyle shocked the public of her time.
