Unbound Collaborative Library Book Lending Program
A collaborative program bringing library books to K-12 students and creating a culture of literacy throughout the community.
Beginning in the second half of the 2018-19 school year, Mason County Central students began seeing green tote bags arriving in their classrooms. They were part of a pilot program, developed as a partnership between the school district and the public library, with the goal of creating a library account for each student in the district and bringing public library materials right to the classroom. Financial support for Unbound has come, in part, from the Rotary Club of Ludington.
Students log on to the Mason County District Library’s online catalog and make requests for books to read at school, to augment their homework, or to take home and read for enjoyment. Then our librarians find the books and sort them by classroom for staff to deliver to each school.
The program grew to include Ludington Area Schools for the past several years. And for the 2025-2026 school year, delivery has been expanded to G2S and West Shore Educational District. This is the second year of delivery to classrooms at the Lower Elementary of MCC. The Staff at the Scottville Library has been involved in a grant writing process that helped MCC schools get a new collection for their library as well as thousands of dollars in new classroom materials. This has been a positive for the schools. The goal has always been to promote literacy and the love of reading.
2025-26 Statistics through March 2026:
- 402 students participated in Unbound!
